VETERANS COUNCIL OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY INITIATES SCHOLARSHIP FUND WITH HELP FROM INDIAN RIVER STATE COLLEGE

VERO BEACH, FL – Within any organization change and growth spawn new ideas alongside refinements of existing systems and programs.  In January 2018, the Veterans Council of Indian River County, a 501(c)(3) charity, dedicated to helping veterans in the county, stretched in a new direction to help the dependents of those veterans.

2018 has brought innovative leadership to the Veterans Council and the launch of a new Scholarship Program designed to assist the dependents of local veterans working hard to reach educational goals.

On Wednesday, January 31st, 2018, Members of The Veterans Council of Indian River County attended a special luncheon held at Indian River State College Mueller Campus, Richardson Center, in Vero Beach.  The luncheon was well attended and the appetizing fare was provided by IRSC Culinary School students.

During the luncheon, Dr. Massey, President of Indian River State College, was presented with a $12,000 check by Retired Colonel Sam Kouns, President of the Veterans Council. The check, given by the Veterans Council to initiate a scholarship fund for IRSC students, represents donations made in the memory of Korean War Veteran George Geyer, and included donations from the America Serving Veterans Foundation, The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), Vietnam Veterans of America Post 1038, the Grand Harbor Community Outreach Program and Veterans Council Development Funds.

Pat Geyer, a dedicated member of the Veterans Council, has been instrumental in guiding the success of many Veterans Council programs. Mrs. Geyer, for whose late husband donations to the scholarship were contributed, reported that the implementation of the Veterans Council Scholarship Program started with help from the IRSC Foundation. Delighted by this step forward for the Veterans Council, Geyer, smiled and stated “We have hopes of expanding even larger scholarship awards to additional colleges in the future.”
